Case Study: Brighton Education – Teaching English Language and Literacy

Online Assessment, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (AMER) System



Teaching English Language and Literacy (TELL) 2010-2013 is a Brighton Education Group Ministry of Education funded project to raise standards of teaching English language and literacy in lower primary schools across 6 eastern and southern states. TELL works through 120 English Language Mentors in 40 clusters of 15 schools (total = 600 primary schools) with about 4,000 Malaysian English Language teachers across 6 southern and eastern peninsular states from the Thai border in Kelantan to the Singapore Causeway in Johor over a three-year period from 2011 to 2013.

TELL operates through geographical clusters of primary schools. Each cluster involves 3 Teaching Mentors (TMs) working in 15 primary schools with 50-80 teachers of English, who teach about 8,000 students per year, or 24,000 students over 3 years. The 50-80 Malaysian Participating Teachers (PTs) in each cluster complete three minimum 80 hour Teacher Continuous Professional Development (TPD) programmes delivered in training sessions on weekday afternoons after school. The TPD programmes enhance the teaching and learning of English through practical, engaging, enjoyable and motivating language activities from the curriculum.

Fluirse designed and developed the original assessment, evaluation, monitoring and reporting system (AMER). AMER measures the critical project data including teacher hours, number of CPD sessions, contact time ratios and Malaysian teacher test scores. All stakeholders, including the Malaysian Ministry of Education, State Departments and District Education Offices have access to AMER and, with passwords, are able to access different levels of information and communications.

Pitman Training is the largest independent network of training centres in Ireland offering career-specific training in Business, Computer and Office Skills such as Medical and Legal Secretary, Medical Terminology, Office Administration, Receptionist, Computer Hardware, Marketing and PR, Accounting, Book-Keeping, Management and IT. As well as in-centre training we also offer our students a range of flexi-study learning options. Currently Pitman Training has the highest employment record in Ireland of any training organisation, with over 77% of students working within 6 months of graduation.

Fluirse developed two courses for Pitman Training Group. These courses (Flash CS4) were delivered to over 100 training centres across the world. The courses were printed and also delivered online and consisted of practical examples for users of Flash CS4 as well as student files for use throughout the course.

Its mission is to help identify, inform, recognise and celebrate Kerry’s next generation of business leaders - and their educators.

The Young Entrepreneur Programme is a unique opportunity to explore and develop the talents of young entrepreneurs. It complements traditional learning by encouraging workshops, case studies and interaction with key business people on top of the participants own ideas. The programme encourages a link between business people, educators and students. At an entrepreneurship event in April 2014, participating students will get the opportunity to have their ideas challenged and encouraged by leading entrepreneurs.

Fluirse developed the assessment and reporting system that enables all programme participants to be evaluated online. The system tracks and records the results of the students and provides the programme leaders with detailed reports on the progress of the participants. This system provide real-time reporting that can be accessed at the click of a button.

Ni Ghrifin, GalwayCOGG was founded under the provisions of Article 31 of the Education Act of 1998 following a campaign led by Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, Gaelscoileanna agus Eagraíocht na Scoileanna Gaeltachta to establish a structure to cater for the educational needs of Gaeltacht schools and of Gaelscoileanna. The Comhairle’s role relates to both primary and post-primary education and the three main areas of work are: The provision of teaching resources, the provision of support services and research.

In 2007, Fluirse designed and developed an Irish language CD-ROM to enhance the teaching and learning of the Irish language in primary schools across Ireland. The curriculum-aligned CD-ROM was delivered to DEIS schools across the country and is still being widely used. The target audience for the CD was children between the ages of 4 and 8.

Online Training Courses for Educators

All courses have been approved by the Department of Education and Skills for Extra Personal Vaction (EPV) days. The courses range from integrating ICT in the classroom to management skills for principals and aspiring principals. All course are delivered through a customised learning management system that allows the Department to track teachers progress and results in real-time.

In 2013, Fluirse introduced a new social media feature to the summer courses, the Teacher Social Network (http://teachersocialnetwork.fluirse.com). This new feature allows teachers to interact socially through the site and share resources, ideas, lesson plans and connect not only with schools in Ireland but internationally also.

-Mani Billan, Western UnionWestern Union has over 14,000 independent users at their many agent locations across the UK. As their network grew, and they operated in an increasingly compliance-driven market, the burden of delivering effective onsite training and testing became increasingly costly.

Flúirse Education Solutions were contracted to design and implement online solution to reduce these costs.

Flúirse Education Solutions developed a complete e-learning site with a “portal” entry to all courses. A live comprehensive glossary was also developed. The site featured video introduction for participants for each course as well as voice over for all content. Tests were added to the end of each module with progress only available when these were completed successfully. Assignments were included at the end of each course also.

A complete registration, progress tracking and end of course feedback questionnaire were also developed for each course on the programme.

Today, Western Union seamlessly deliver compliance training annually to every agent location across the UK using this system and are currently in the final stages of expanding this platform across their Nordic and Iberian territories.
